National Software Systems Creates Customized Path to Success with Revelation Software

The January 7, 2016 issue of Database Trends and Applications features an article written by Joyce Wells titled National Software Systems Creates Customized Path to Success with Revelation Software.

As a leading IT consulting firm, National Software Systems provides a range of individualized business solutions, including custom software and database development, business network installation and support, and IT consulting services.

For more than 15 years, National Software Systems has been a Revelation Software solution provider. During that time, National Software Systems has developed many software packages individually suited to particular customer requirements.

The array of business types using National Software Systems’ services is wide-ranging. The company has provided a large manufacturer of stuffed animals with the software it needed to track its business and manufacturing processes, a police department with an add-on module for maintaining a list of homeowners whose alarm systems were being monitored, a commercial debt recovery company with software to maintain a CRM-type list of debtors as well as potential clients, and a sheet metal manufacturer of sheet metal packaging with custom software for its business processes.

The common thread among these organizations is that they have all invested time and money over years to create the exact software products they need to run their businesses smoothly. Revelation Software products are at the core of these companies’ systems and they rely on National Software Systems in partnership with Revelation to keep pace with their changing needs and modern market requirements.

As a result of its breadth of experience handling the disparate software requirements of many types of businesses, National Software Systems has become expert in providing individualized capabilities.

“We have particularly focused on manufacturing software and we have a base set of modules that we offer to customers and then adapt them to their specific needs so they become highly customized solutions,” said John Bouley, president of National So
ftware Systems.

Many of the applications that National Software Systems has developed with OpenInsight are highly customized to do exactly what a business needs.  Read  On...

OpenInsight named in DBTA Trend-Setting Products in Data and Information Management for 2016

The pressure is on for organizations to react faster to changing opportunities and risks by leveraging data to improve decision making.

The good news is that analytics-driven enterprises have more data than ever available for scrutiny. But the wealth of information being amassed from sources inside and outside organizations is creating a burden as well as an opportunity. In addition to well-established data management approaches such as relational, MultiValue, and the mainframe, there are now hybrid scenarios incorporating cloud, NoSQL, Hadoop, Spark, and other open source projects.

NoSQL is on the rise, according to a survey of data professionals conducted by Unisphere Research, a division of Information Today, Inc., and sponsored by Dell Software. The 2015 survey report showed that nearly 10% of respondents were already using NoSQL database technology, 12% were currently deploying NoSQL, and 18% expected to deploy NoSQL in 1–2 years. Cloud is also on the horizon. The 2015 IOUG survey on database manageability, sponsored by Oracle and produced by Unisphere, showed that close to half of the Oracle Database administrators questioned see cloud computing in general as a major shift in their organizations, and 43% believe that big data in all its forms is reshaping their computing landscapes. And, according to another recent Unisphere survey among IT practitioners and stakeholders who are subscribers to Database Trends and Applications and Big Data Quarterly magazines, 55% of respondents were currently using Hadoop, and of these, 42% were running four or more clusters.

In short, the days of one system to depend on are coming to an end. And, not only do organizations have to make the right choices about technologies to best manage, store, analyze, and protect data, but they also must have the right tools in place to proactively monitor and manage increasingly complex data environments for peak performance. Simple it is not.

According to the Unisphere-Dell survey, nearly half of the DBAs questioned manage more than 25 database instances and almost 10% manage more than 100 data- base instances, with the number of database instances each DBA is responsible for on the rise. In addition to management of multiple database instances, DBAs are also handling database systems from multiple vendors. Approximately 70% of the respondents said that the DBAs in their organizations were responsible for databases from at least two vendors and 7% indicated that their DBAs were responsible for managing database systems from five or more vendors.

Recent industry research studies draw a picture of organizations facing difficulties making data available and adhering to agreed-upon SLAs, while being anxious to get meaningful benefit from data. Another Unisphere study of data managers and professionals, found that one-third of respondents reported low levels of satisfaction with their data availability strategies, with most reporting difficulties with funding new efforts. Additional data centers, tools, and people to support these efforts can be expensive. The study conducted among IOUG members and sponsored by EMC revealed that businesses are seeking more uptime from service-level agreements but IT departments are struggling to provide it. According to the report, only 28% stated that, at best, they can sometimes meet their agreed-upon SLAs for downtime.  Read On...

The results are in! The UD 5.0 is between 16% and 20% faster than the UD 4.7 when running without encryption. We have compared the Universal Driver 4.7 to the Universal Driver 5.0, running both with and without encryption on OpenInsight 9.4.

There are four tests which were completed using all three configurations (UD4.7 without encryption, UD 5.0 without encryption and UD 5.0 with encryption).  Click HERE to view the results graphically and detailed screen shots of the  parameters used for each of the tests.

What is Volume Shadow Copy Service-based backup?

Margaret Rouse of WhatIs.com has published an article titled "What is Volume shadow Copy Service-based backup?" that we at Revelation Software would like to share so that you can take advantage of the full potential of the Universal Driver NUL 5.0
.

A Volume Shadow Copy Service-based backup (VSS-based backup) is a Windows service that captures and creates snapshots called shadow copies. VSS, also known as Volume Snapshot Service, operates at the block level of the file system and enables virtual server backup in Microsoft environments.

In addition to the service itself, Windows VSS has three major components:

VSS writer: Each VSS-aware application installs its own VSS writer to a computer during the initial installation. The VSS writer tells the backup tool how to back up the application and its data. VSS writers are commonly included within database-driven applications such as Active Directory or Exchange Server. Database servers such as Microsoft SQL Server also contain VSS writers.

VSS requestor: The VSS requestor initiates the backup process. Any application that needs to quiesce data for capture can play the role of VSS requestor. In a majority of cases the backup application acts as the VSS requestor.

VSS provider: VSS providers allow the VSS backup process to work with the system's hardware and operating system (OS). Providers are modular, and a single system often contains multiple providers. OS providers allow VSS to be operating system-aware. Similarly, hardware providers act as a proxy between the VSS service and hardware components such as storage arrays. For example, a storage-level hardware provider may create the snapshot used during the backup process.  Read On...
